Fires in the Otways…

Last year’s drought was incredibly tough, and now bushfires across the Otways and other parts of Victoria have brought more devastation. The impact on people, communities, and small businesses has been heartbreaking. After an already challenging year for regional Victorian businesses, the loss of our usual summer trade — the season that sustains us through the year — has been another heavy blow. It can feel overwhelming.

I want to sincerely thank the incredible CFA and DEECA workers and volunteers who have worked tirelessly, often in dangerous conditions, to protect lives, communities, and country. Your dedication and courage do not go unnoticed. @cfasouthwest @deeca_vic

My heart is also with those in other parts of Victoria who have not been as fortunate — those who have lost homes, properties, and businesses overnight. I see you, and I am thinking of you all.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out with messages and phone calls to check on us. Your kindness and support mean more than I can say.

This photo was taken from my backyard in Colac on Saturday afternoon where ash and embers fell. While the fires in the Otways are now contained and people have been allowed to return to their homes, farms, and businesses, we remain on watch. With the land so dry still, the risk is never far away. We wait. We hope. We pray for rain.
